FRACTURES OF THE TALUS

The talus is the bone that sits between the tibia (shin bone) and calcaneus (heel bone). The talus is a very important bone in the ankle/foot.  Most fractures of the talus occur after motor vehicle accidents or other high impact injuries. Certain fractures can occurring with snowboarding accidents.

The talus is a bone that is part of three joints. The talus, tibia and fibula make up the ankle joint. The talus and the calcaneus (heel bone) make up the subtalar joint.  This joint is below the ankle joint and is responsible for inversion/eversion of the foot. The talus also creates a joint in the foot with the navicular bone.  The talus is an essential bone in the ankle/foot.

TREATMENT

Most talus fractures can cause pain, chronic arthritis and foot impairment if not treated.  Therefore, most talus fractures require surgery to decrease the chances of this occurring.
